World’s First AI Minister in Albania
Tirana | Albanian Prime Minister Edi Rama has inducted the world’s first Artificial Intelligence (AI) minister into his cabinet. The decision aims to manage public sector tenders and contracts transparently and without corruption.
The new AI minister is named “Diella”, which means “sun” in Albanian. Diella is not a human minister but a virtual AI system controlled by the government.
Prime Minister Rama stated:
“Public tenders will now be 100% open and transparent. Diella’s involvement will leave no room for corruption.”
Diella has already been serving as a virtual assistant on the e-Albania digital service platform since January, helping citizens quickly access government documents, certificates, and other services.
Criticism and Concerns:
Questions have been raised about the constitutional and legal validity of such an appointment. Experts also worry about accountability if decisions go wrong. Political critics point out that AI systems can be biased and require human oversight.
Future Prospects:
Albania, aspiring for European Union membership, considers corruption-free governance essential. By using AI to oversee tenders and public services, the government aims to increase transparency and efficiency. However, experts warn that moving forward without clear accountability and legal clarity could create challenges.
