Supreme Court interim order in Waqf Amendment case
Relief for Muslim organizations
New Delhi ∙ The Supreme Court yesterday issued an interim order on the petitions related to the Waqf Amendment Act. In a verdict that gave major relief to Muslim organizations, the court made its stance clear.
The court stayed the provision that required a person to be a believer for at least five years to become a member of the Waqf Board. In addition, the Supreme Court clarified that one-third of the members of the board must not be non-Muslims.
The bench headed by Chief Justice B.R. Gavai issued the order. Several Muslim organizations and individuals had filed petitions challenging the constitutional validity of the Waqf Amendment Act.
With the Supreme Court’s interim order, the existing restrictions on the functioning of Waqf Boards have been removed. Muslim organizations welcomed the court’s decision.
